Der Fehlercode muss nämlich noch >>8 geschoben werden, um an den wirklichen zu kommen.
Bei ping? Schau dir mal die Exitcodes dort an http://linux.die.net/man/8/ping oder rufe man ping auf.
//EDIT 256>>8 ist 1 und bei ping bedeutet das: nicht erreichbar oder Paketverlust
